The Indiana State University School of Music will present a Fall Choral Showcase Concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14 in the University Hall Theater, located in the Bayh College of Education building.
The concert will feature three Indiana State choral ensembles. The Concert Choir, under the direction of Scott Buchanan, will perform a diverse program of exciting repertoire that is both sacred and secular in nature. Composers include Tomás Luis de Victoria, Libby Larsen, David Dickau, Jake Runestad, Vaclovas Augustinas, as well as arrangements by Craig Hella Johnson and Shawn Kirchner. Flint Dollar, a graduate assistant in the School of Music, will serve as the accompanist.
“This is going to be an exciting program, from the standpoint of diversity,” Buchanan said. “The program spans nearly 500 years of choral music, including a 16th century motet and a few 21st century pieces that should have the audience on an emotional rollercoaster. The students have truly enjoyed working on this music. I have tried to stretch their comfort zone a bit with this repertoire, but we have enjoyed the process.”
The Women’s Choir will also offer a diverse program including works by Patti Brennan, Vijay Singh, Franz Schubert, Mark Patterson and Eugene Butler.
“We have a talented collection of singers in the group this year,” said conductor Yana Weinstein. Andrea Marlowe will serve as the accompanist.
The Sycamore Singers will open the concert with a set of vocal jazz charts. “I have really grown fond of the vocal jazz genre,” Buchanan said. “The music demands that each singer be vocally independent and possess a good ear.”
The set will include “Sing, Sing, Sing” (Louis Prima), “Dream” (Johnny Mercer), “Falling in Love Again” (Lerner & Hollander), “You Make Me Feel So Young” (Gordon & Myrow) and the theme song from Hawaii Five-O (Mort Stevens).
Buchanan also conducts the Sycamore Singers and the jazz combo will include Seth Jines on piano, Jon Bemis on bass and Alec Branstetter on drums.
The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, call 812-237-4590.
