SULLIVAN COUNTY - A woman is dead after police say she brandished a gun during a standoff at a motel in Sullivan today, resulting in an exchange of gunfire.
The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Sullivan County Coroner’s Office. Her name has not been released, as the death investigation is ongoing at this time. An autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow morning at Terre Haute Regional Hospital.
Indiana State Police and Sullivan City Police officers responded to reports of a disorderly female at the Days Inn motel, located at 907 W. SR 154, just before 1:30 p.m. The situation lasted several hours, ultimately ending with the suspect being fatally shot as she allegedly waved a gun.
"The Indiana State Police South Zone SWAT team members entered the room at which time the female suspect brandished a firearm at the ISP SWAT members. Officers then engaged the suspect using a department issued firearm," ISP Public Information Officer B.J. Patterson said.
The motel guest had allegedly made threatening statements and refused to leave after being asked by motel management, according to the report.
She reportedly ran to her room and locked the door upon initial confrontation by police. Upon learning that she was armed, officers exited the room and began evacuation procedures of the motel.
A Sullivan County arrest warrant was obtained. ISP Hostage Crisis Negotiators reportedly made several attempts to communicate with the suspect, to no avail.
The Sullivan County Sheriff’s department, Sullivan City Police Department, Indiana State Police Crime scene units, Indiana State Police Detectives, Sullivan County Prosecutors Office, Sullivan County Coroner’s office and Indiana State Police Emergency Response Team assisted at the scene.
