PUTNAM COUNTY - An allegedly impaired Indianapolis woman was arrested on multiple charges after leading police on a pursuit that began in Putnam County and ended in Hendricks County yesterday evening.
Karen D. Ponder, 53, was booked into the Putnam County Jail after eventually crashing her vehicle and being released from a local hospital. She is charged with the following:
According to Indiana State Police Sgt. Matt Ames, several 911 calls were received about the suspect's silver Mazda passenger car that was all over the roadway and traveling eastbound on US 40 near CR 625 W around 6:15 p.m.
Putnam County Deputy Anthony Brown attempted to stop the suspect vehicle; However, Ponder refused to stop and accelerated away from the deputy, Ames said.
ISP Trooper Colton Maynor deployed stop sticks, successfully deflating two tires. Meanwhile, Ponder reportedly continued traveling eastbound on US 40, slowing to 20-30 mph for a few miles. She then sped up just before losing control of the car and crashing into a utility pole.
"After traveling through Stilesville, the vehicle began to accelerate again, traveling at speeds in excess of 100 mph with two flat tires. Upon entering Hendricks County, the vehicle drifted off the roadway traveling to the south side of US 40, then swerving back to the north and into the median. Upon entering the median, the driver overcorrected and drove back across both eastbound lanes of US 40, running off the south side of the roadway. This caused the vehicle to roll two to three times, eventually striking a power pole and coming to a rest," according to the report.
Trooper Maynor and Trooper Kyle Hall approached the vehicle and took the suspect into custody after refusing medical treatment at the scene.
Results from a subsequent chemical test are pending at this time.
