VERMILLION COUNTY -- A South Bend man was arrested for reckless driving after officers pulled him over near Newport Wednesday afternoon.
Bobby L. Peck, 55, was booked into the Vermillion County Jail on the Class C misdemeanor and released on bond a short time later.
According to the Vermillion County Sheriff's Office, the traffic stop was initiated just after noon when deputies observed the southbound silver SUV exceeding 90 miles per hour in the 60 mph zone on SR 63, north of the Newport caution light. Peck, in a medical transport vehicle, reportedly stated that he was taking his passengers to Evansville, noting they were running late for their doctor’s appointments.
Deputies took Peck into custody for operating a vehicle at a reckless speed while transporting patients and having a suspended license.Further investigation revealed the driver had a with a lengthy history of suspensions and various other traffic offenses.
Ultimately, the medical company found another driver to pick up the passengers and vehicle.
VERMILLION COUTY --- A man was arrested for drunk driving last night after he was seen outside of a Clinton gas station, appearing to be "highly intoxicated," according to one witness.
James E. McDowell III, 50, of Clinton and formerly of Terre Haute, was booked into the Vermillion County Jail around 7 p.m. He is charged with driving while intoxicated - with a BAC of .21 percent -- and driving while suspended - prior.
According to the report, Vermillion County Sheriff's Deputy Keith Warner was dispatched to the Corner Stop Gas station on a report of the intoxicated suspect. Upon arrival, a store employee reported that the man drove off in a minivan, traveling northbound.
Warner ultimately found the vehicle on CR. 275E and took McDowell into custody following a traffic stop for erratic driving.
"The vehicle left the roadway several times, nearly wrecking into a yard," Warner said.
