SULLIVAN COUNTY - Officials say one man has been charged after allegedly kidnapping and battering a Sullivan man early Thursday morning and fleeing the scene.
Michael L. Scott, 29, of Shelburn, was booked into the Sullivan County Jail Thursday afternoon. He is charged with:
Sullivan County Sheriff Clark Cottom said the victim, Robert Nagy, 28, was struck in the head with a hatchet during the battery. Nagy is being treated for serious head and facial injuries at a Terre Haute hospital, where he is awaiting transfer to an Indianapolis hospital, he said.
The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office and Vigo County Sheriff’s Office worked together through the day on the case to make locate the suspect.
A foot search with K9’s and drones was conducted. Vigo County Sheriff’s officials ultimately located Scott near a railroad track, in the area of Oregon Church Road.
Further investigation revealed that an Nagy was forcefully taken from his Sullivan residence and reportedly forced into the trunk of a car.
Cottom explained that the victim was then taken to a rural area, where he was severely beaten. He noted that a female passenger had also allegedly been battered by Scott following Nagy's kidnapping. She managed to escape and find help.
"The female jumped from the car near US 41 and Harlan Road in Vigo County. She then flagged down a passerby, who transported her to the Terre Haute Police Department." Cottom said.
Scott fled southbound on US41 in the woman's vehicle.
"A short time later, Scott crashed the car near Boot City, on US41 south, before fleeing the scene on foot," Cottom said.
The woman's name is not being released at this time and is not a suspect in the kidnapping. She was not seriously injured and declined a medical treatment, according to the report.
Scott remains held in the Sullivan County Jail under $120,000. bond with 10 percent allowed. Additional charges could follow, pending further Vigo County Sheriff's Office investigation.
