For about 20 minutes, I visited what I'm sure was the happiest place to be in Terre Haute yesterday afternoon: Deming Park swimming pool.
The day almost didn't happen. Remember the parks department announced it was pulling the plug on the pool and it would not re-open following the end of last season. Declining attendance and costly maintenance to operate the public pool were big factors in that decision.
But, now you have it. The pool is open.
If you grew up in Terre Haute --- and spent many childhood days there -- you might agree that this is something to celebrate. Against all odds, it stayed afloat. Necessary repairs were made and funding to run the aging swimming pool filtered in with community support and donations.
Things are as they should be on its first day open, I thought to myself as I stood there at 1 p.m. The water was sparkling and children were splashing. The sun was shining down on the swimming pool as it has done for 54 summers in the scenic eastside park.
I noticed several signs hanging for patrons to read as they enter the pool area. One warns there is 500 - person capacity. On its first day open this season, there were just a couple dozen people enjoying the pool. Hopefully more residents will drop by soon and we'll avoid another wave of rumors regarding the pool closing.
