"Like the Good Samaritan, may we not be ashamed of touching the wounds of those who suffer, but try to heal them with concrete acts of love"
With Pope Francis' historic visit in the United States this week, I'd like to share a powerful quote of his from 2013:
"Like the Good Samaritan, may we not be ashamed of touching the wounds of those who suffer, but try to heal them with concrete acts of love."
A Terre Haute woman who lives near the site of the motorcycle and SUV crash, that happened Monday afternoon, exemplifies this more than anyone else I've s witnessed yet. I don't know her name, and I didn't even notice her presence until she was ready to leave the scene -- when paramedics had gotten the victim onto the ambulance.
In looking back at a couple pictures I took at the scene of the accident, you can catch a glimpse of her flip flops, gray shirt and blonde hair as she knelt by the injured man and talked with him by his side, while he lied in supine position on the ground after being thrown from his bike. As she eventually backed away from the victim, letting the medics take over, I noticed a good amount of thick, bright blood on the front of her t-shirt.
I asked her if she'd been on the motorcycle too, and she said no. I asked her if she knew the man, and she said no. She told me she'd heard a loud boom at about 4:15 p.m. and immediately ran out to see what happened. Without giving it a second thought, she remained there as long as needed.
This unnamed good Samaritan then patted me on the back, made a sigh and walked back in the direction of her home. She'd done her part, as an unsung hero; and I sensed that was enough for her, whether anyone noticed or not. But I think many of the professionals and bystanders there did notice. I saw one police officer giving her some hand wash solution, just before I approached her and told her what she did was remarkable.
It's reassuring to know we have someone so selfless living in this neighborhood and in the Terre Haute community.
