TERRE HAUTE, Indiana: I’m happy to deliver you daily local news via the Indiana Central News website!
Now that I’m covering the city where I've lived all my life, I think it’s only appropriate to include the words “Terre Haute" in name of my blog on Indiana Central News. Formerly known as “A New Perspective,” my blog name is now “Terre Haute Times" (because “Perry’s Perspective” was already taken by another news site.)
In this next six months, look for me to step up the content with more court, business and feature stories.
As a journalist, a top priority when considering publishing content, in any city, is simply proximity-related. According to Online Etymology Dictionary, the word origin and history for the adjective "proximate" is from the Latin word proximatus, meaning "neighboring," "to draw near," from proximus "nearest, next."
Indiana Central News’ central focus is Terre Haute and Vigo County. You will notice my original content, including all ICN photos, articles and event coverage, is more heavy on city limits. Because ICN is being run by one person (me) and that it’s a home-based business -- with limited funding -- I’m doing more city police and government stories. I know I use the word funding a lot, but imagine what I could do if ICN had money to do it! I do believe news sites should be subscriber-based, but i'm trying to, instead, accept donations after my teenage son once noted that idea is not uncommon today.
ICN-- including the name and the website development-- started out as an impulsive move on my part. I went with my gut, and in just a few minutes’ time, the site was born. My “baby” will be 6 -months -old Aug. 18!
The endeavor kicked off with me thinking as a hobby journalist in-between jobs, wanting to showcase my personal work. However, the idea was so good, in fact, that it caught on pretty well around here. You can instead see it as a professional showcase of my work and a snapshot of life in the Terre Haute area.
All of these stories are community snapshots; and I couldn't do it without the people, places and things which equals CONTENT. Put me in a room with several journalists, and I HOPE our stories are never exactly the same. I want ICN to stand out in news delivery, while producing original content with a basic and easy -to- navigate web feel.
It's amazing how when someone loves his or her work, it always shows. And I do love it.
I thank God for opening this door that has always been shut to me; now I’m reporting on my hometown, as I always intended. It’s true that faith can open better doors than you ever dreamed! I plan to blog later on about those shut doors, life’s ups and downs, neighborhoods and all that jazz. The ideas are never ending, and I am an enterprising reporter.
I’ve said it before. I value all my work, at all the newspapers, in all the towns I’ve written about in the past 15 years. All of those experiences are the stepping stones that brought me to this precise point in my life and are pieces of the fabric that inspired ICN. Without the work experiences and the professionals I’ve worked under, I’d be in another field.
Stay tuned. And feel free to contact me by email.
