Indiana Central News is a "one-man" operation. No one else is affilliated with the website. From now on, I urge anyone to contact me with information regarding possible misrepresentation of ICN and especially to confirm whether or not I know the individual personally or professionally who might be claiming to be "with ICN."
One of ICNs strongest elements is an established credibility within a community that offers multiple other informational mediums. Fortunately, many of the professional sources I've cultivated over time would likely recognize any unusual information or representation regarding ICN -- as I've worked tirelessly as an independent reporter to build a solid reputation.
Following this mistaken notion involving a person purporting to be my associate, to at least one person I am aware of at a recent crash scene, I'm realizing the line has been crossed regarding my integrity as a local journalist. There were also a couple of separate instances last year at a Vigo County fire and another crash that made me question photos sent to me via social media from random individuals. I'm sure they mean well or perhaps there was a misunderstanding. While I appreciate their enthusiasm, I suggest they send their photos elsewhere.
I don't need assumed volunteers of any kind, and I especially never intended for anyone to assume or imply they are an associate of mine in way, shape or form. Submitted photos by random individuals definitely were never intended on my site for harder news items and I would not encourage anyone to seek out material that would be contributed to me for use with no strings atttached. Use of any submitted material would be at my discretion, in any case.
In my unique situation, and with all the many other roles I also must perform in order to maintain the website every day as a publisher, I am ultimately responsible for everything here. Along that line, and due to the serious nature of topics and news I routinely cover, I am implementing tougher rules regarding content I will allow on this site --- which is basically a monetized blog. I make effort to attribute information with sources, and will now have to make sure to include my own byline on every story to reinforce what is my own writing for the public. I also make it a point to clearly credit each photo.
As ICN is ready to celebrate its second-year anniversary Feb. 18, I continuously work to maintain a bond of trust within the community I cover. I have been open with my contact information from the beginning and will continue to available in that way. I encourge the ICN audience to report errors, concerns and suggestions. Meanwhile, I will continue to look at issues as they develop with with running the site solo.
Reflecting on when I started ICN, I recall writing a personal blog published on this site about my continuing dedication to delivering quality local news, as an introduction to the Terre Haute area readers. Here is an excerpt:
