A pack of energetic children walked across the schoolyard after the first day back at Davis Park Elementary this afternoon, stopping obediently at the corner before crossing. Morris "Junior" Wheeler was standing at his usual spot, wearing his crossing guard vest. Wheeler, 83, has been working as a crossing guard on this corner "a long time," he said. In fact, it's been about 20 years. He said he always looks forward to the first day of school. "Hi, Mr. Wheeler!" a couple of children yelled out, greeting him after a summer of not seeing one other. Others waved to him. He smiled as he had the group line up before the light changed and then led them safely across Poplar Street. Keeping a watchful eye, he told one boy not to cross South 19th Street just yet. Meanwhile several buses were getting ready to roll out of the parking lot nearby. The first day back to school went smoothly. Click here to see the Vigo County School Corp. 2016-2017 calendar. Comments are closed.
