CARLISLE— Indiana Department of Correction joined the Indiana Department of Natural Resources on June 18 to participate in becoming nationally certified to fight wildland fires. Staff from Branchville Correctional Facility, Putnamville Correctional Facility and Wabash Valley Correctional Facility attended the training. The hands-on portion of the training required participants complete an eight- hour skills day, while the class portion required 24 hours of online training. Each participant received their certification in Basic Wildland Firefighting, a national certification. Now certified in Basic Wildland Firefighting, IDOC can maintain mutual aid agreements with several communities throughout the state, and provide back-up to their partners within the community. “Everyone learned that it takes a great deal of stamina, endurance, and physical ability to be a wildland firefighter.” stated Wabash Valley Correctional Facility’s Fire Chief Gordon Becher. He continued, “We were required to cut fire lines using wildland tools not normally used in conventional firefighting, as well as deploying an emergency shelter in the event your way out of a wildland fire became blocked.” Wabash Valley Correctional Facility is currently seeking qualified candidates to join their team.
