Terre Haute, Indiana
By Lucy Perry The local community gathered to show its support for first responders during a prayer vigil this evening, just days after five Dallas police officers were gunned down. A few audience members held signs with messages of gratitude, such as: "You are my hero" and "Dear officer, thank you for all you do to keep us safe." The event, held at Terre Haute Police headquarters parking lot, served as a time to remember THPD Officer Brent Long, who was killed in the line of duty as well, five years ago. Officer Long was shot and killed reportedly as he was assisting US Marshals attempting to arrest a fugitive on July 11, 2011. THPD Chaplain Dan Walls thanked the crowd for remembering the fallen officers. He thanked the first responders for their willingness to serve and protect before a moment of silence for those who have given their lives in the line of duty. Walls said their dedication is humbling. "Just like those who laid down their lives in Dallas, and many other places in America." he said of slain officers ultimate sacrifice and courage, adding, ... "Aside from our brothers and sisters in the military, no other profession lays down their lives -- and willingly surrenders their lives --- to protect complete strangers." Several members of various police agencies and other emergency departments in attendance listened to words of encouragement by spouses and representatives of the THPD. Mayor Duke Bennett and other politicians were also present. The event concluded with the crowd of more than 200 joining together to sing of "God Bless America."
