Wabash Valley Correctional Facility
CARLISLE -- The Wabash Valley Correctional Facility (WVCF) is not your typical rest stop but it’s one Cops Cycling for Survivors look forward to every year. Yesterday marked their fifth consecutive stop at the maximum-security facility. During the Terre Haute to Princeton leg of their 13- day goodwill journey, the group also joined WVCF staff for a very special memorial ceremony. Cops Cycling for Survivors (CCFS) is a group of active and retired police and civilian riders who raise awareness and support law enforcement survivors through their annual 1,000 mile bicycle tour around the State of Indiana. The cyclists also raise funds utilized to assist survivors with emotional and financial support. A $500 donation from WVCF’s Inside Out Dads & PLUS (Purposeful Living Units Serve) programs was presented to the group during the memorial ceremony, dedicated to the memory of fallen correctional professionals. Included in the list of the fallen is WVCF Correctional Officer Timothy Betts. The Greene County native died of a heart attack in August of 2012 while escorting an unruly offender to segregation. Members of his family participated in the memorial ceremony. All available staff lined the front administration building roadway to welcome the wheelwrights as they arrived Monday around 10:30 a.m. After the ceremony the CCFS crew enjoyed a brief break and lunch provided by their WVCF hosts.
