![]() Indiana Department of Natural Resources Division of Law Enforcement GREENFIELD (Hancock County)- Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating a treestand accident that has claimed the life of a Greenfield man. At approximately 10:24 p.m. last night, units from multiple agencies were dispatched to the area of 5300 South 575 East in Greenfield to assist with locating a hunter that failed to return home. Upon arriving on scene and executing a search of the area, the body of the missing hunter was located a short time later by a deputy with the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department and a trooper with the Indiana State Police. The hunter has been identified as Robert D. Smith, 59, of Greenfield. Notification has been made to the family. Initial investigation reveals that Smith was attempting to remove a treestand from an apparent rotten and dead tree. While doing this, the tree broke at the base causing Smith to fall from a height of approximately 18 feet. It appears the accident took place at least 4 hours prior to Smith being located. Smith was not utilizing any type of safety harness or equipment. No foul play is suspected in this case. Indiana Conservation Officers were assisted by ISP, Hancock County sheriff’s Department, Hancock County Emergency Dispatch Center, Hancock County Highway Department and Hancock County Coroner’s office.
