INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indianapolis man was shot and killed by a police officer assisting in executing a search warrant at his residence Friday morning. He allegedly pointed a long gun at officers as they entered, prompting the officer to fire his weapon at the suspect.
Indiana State Police Sgt. Rich Myers reports that Terry Edwards, 59, was fatally shot by ISP Senior Trooper Josh Watson, a 12 year veteran. Detectives had obtained a search warrant for the Gimber Street Address to search for any handgun, shotgun, shotgun shells and a cell phone. "When officers knocked and announced their presence and purpose to serve a search warrant there was no answer. Officers then forcibly opened the front door. Before entering to begin their search of the residence the officers were confronted by a person armed with a long gun. The suspect was told to put the gun down, but instead raised the gun toward a state police officer, who was also a member of the SWAT team. That officer, in defense of his own life, shot the armed suspect," Myers said in a press release. ISP personnel were assisting detectives with the Brown County Sheriff’s Department as that agency was continuing an investigation of a suspect alleged to have fired multiple gunshots into a Brown County residence on May 7. "The loss of any life is tragic. Events like this can be avoided when suspects who have been involved in criminal acts comply with the lawful orders of police officers." Myers said.
