![]() UPDATE by ISP Sgt. Stephen Wheeles, Sept. 7- This afternoon, the suspect in a two day manhunt surrendered to state police detectives at the Ripley County Jail. Law enforcement agencies were searching for William “Billy” A. Russell, 43, Moores Hill, in connection with a shooting that occurred at DJ’s Bar in Milan in the early morning hours of Saturday, September 5th. The shooting injured Jonathan D. K. Smith, 37, Moores Hill. Russell allegedly shot Smith during an altercation at the bar. Russell fled the scene and had not been located by law enforcement prior to him turning himself in today. Russell was incarcerated at approximately 1:37 PM at the Ripley County Jail and faces charges of attempted murder, aggravated battery, battery with a deadly weapon, and possession of a handgun without a permit. After undergoing the normal book-in process, Russell will be given an initial court date to appear in the Ripley County Courts. State police detectives also -- UPDATE by ISP Sgt. Stephen Wheeles, Sept.6 - The victim in yesterday morning’s shooting in Milan has been identified as Jonathan D. K. Smith, 37, Moores Hill, IN. Smith was shot at least one time at DJ’s Bar on Main Street in Milan. Smith was transported to the University of Cincinnati hospital. Smith’s condition is unknown at this time. -- A manhunt is still underway for the suspect, William A. Russell, 43, Moores Hill, IN. Russell is described as being 6’ 1” and 185 pounds with brown hair and hazel eyes. Russell was last seen wearing a black shirt with two zeroes on the front and back of the shirt in white print. He was wearing light colored cargo shorts and a black ball cap. He was also wearing light colored tennis shoes. The Indiana State Police continues to seek the public’s help in locating Russell. Anyone with information on Russell’s location is encouraged to contact the Indiana State Police at (812)689-5000. Russell is still considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached by the public. The Indiana State Police continues to be assisted by the Ripley County Sheriff’s Department and the Milan Police Department. -- Early Morning Shooting in Milan Injures One-MANHUNT UNDERWAY Indiana State Police Ripley County-Early this morning, the Indiana State Police and Ripley County Sheriff’s Department responded to a shooting that occurred at DJ’s Bar, 203 N. Main Street, in Milan, IN that resulted in one man being transported a Cincinnati hospital with serious injuries. The initial investigation by Indiana State Police detectives determined that the Ripley County Sheriff’s Department received a call at approximately 3:30 AM that one person had been shot at DJ’s Bar in Milan as a result of a confrontation with another man. Upon initially arriving at the scene, officers located one male who had been shot. The victim was transported to Margaret Mary Hospital in Batesville before being taken to a Cincinnati area hospital for treatment. The extent of the victim’s injuries are not know at this time. The victim’s name will not be released at this time. The suspect left the area prior to officers arriving on scene. During the course of the investigation, detectives identified a suspect as William A. Russell, 43, Moores Hill, Indiana. He is 6’ 1” and 185 pounds with brown hair and hazel eyes. Russell has not been located at this time. He is believed to be in the Milan or Moores Hill area and possibly traveling by foot. Russell is to be considered armed and dangerous. Anyone who sees Russell should not approach him but call the Indiana State Police. Anyone with information on Russell’s whereabouts are encouraged to contact the Indiana State Police-Versailles Post at (812)689-5000.
