The Vigo County Historical Society Museum opened its new location at Ninth Street and Wabash Avenue in Terre Haute this week.
After more than a year-and -a -half of construction, staff and volunteers welcomed their first guests to the grand opening Tuesday. The museum was located at 1411 S. Sixth St. for several decades, until officials purchased the former furniture business building at 929 Wabash Ave. and transformed it into a modern display for collections covering the county's 200 -year history. Multiple exhibits highlight the cultural, military, educational life and times of the county, as well as plenty of folklore and other items of interest. Vigo County School Corp. elementary students from the third grade were welcomed among the museum's first visitors to learn more about the community where they live. and many local legends from long ago, such as Francis Vigo, Zachary Taylor, William Henry Harrison, Paul Dresser and Eugene V. Debs. A ribbon cutting ceremony is set for Nov. 19. Museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday noon to 5 p.m. The museum is closed on Mondays.
