VERMILLION COUNTY -- Officials say a Michigan father was killed by an impaired semi-truck driver in a two-vehicle crash in Vermillion County last night. According to information from the Vermillion County Sheriff's Office, Kamaljeet Sangra , 41, of Ontario, Canada was driving a 2007 Freightliner semi and trailer, southbound in the north bound lanes SR 63 when he crashed head-on into the pick up truck driven by Michael J. Leach , 47,of Howell, Mich. A passenger in the pick-up truck, the 10-year-old son of Leach, was treated and released to family at a nearby hospital for minor injuries suffered in the crash. Sangra was arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated -- resulting in death, a Level 5 felony. He is currently held in the Vermillion County Jail without bond until his initial hearing. According to the report, emergency crews were dispatched to the scene just outside the entrance of the Cayuga Fairgrounds near northbound SR 63, near Cayuga at about 6:45 p.m.
The roadway was closed for several hours while crews worked the scene. Officers from the Vermillion County Sheriff's Office, Indiana State Police, Cayuga Town Marshal's Office, Dana Town Marshal's Office, Vermillion County Coronor's Office, Vermillion County EMS and Cayuga & Hillsdale Fire and Rescue were on scene to assist with the crash and for traffic control.
Riley Fire Department Chief Jeff Fox is retiring after 33 years of service. In the last 26 years of his tenure, he's worked in the capacity of chief for the department.
According to a press release tonight, the Riley Fire Department Board of Directors has appointed Matt McCullough to fill the vacancy.
McCullough will take the helm of the department Jan. 1. McCullough, a 12 - year veteran of the department, currently serves as a career member and Deputy Chief of Administration, according to the press release. |
