Early morning gunfire was exchanged today, resulting in the arrest of the two Terre Haute men allegedly involved -- after an intense pursuit.
Erik Boaz, 23, and Joshua K. Boaz, 28, were booked into the Vigo County Jail at about 1:30 p.m. Erik Boaz faces two counts of aggravated battery and Joshua Boaz is facing two counts of aggravated battery, in addition to a charge of assisting a criminal.
Vigo County Sheriff's Department deputies responded to the call of gun shots being fired at a residence on the south side at about 5 a.m. No injuries were reported in the gunfire.
When deputies arrived at the scene, the home owner reportedly stated that he was getting ready to leave his house to go to work when a green Buick Century pulled up and stopped in front of his driveway, allegedly blocking him from leaving the area.
According to Chief Deputy John Moats, the vehicle then drove away a short distance and stopped again just before reaching Springhill Drive. The homeowner proceeded to get into his vehicle and pull away from his residence but couldn’t leave due to the green Buick blocking the roadway, he said.
A passenger then got out of the Buick and confronted the resident about the whereabouts of another person.
"The Victim told the suspect he didn’t know who he was asking about. The passenger got back into the car and that driver got out asking again about the same person while allegedly holding a black handgun, " Moats stated in a press release.
The Victim backed away in his vehicle and drove around the Buick into the grass and turned east onto Springhill Drive.
"The suspect driver then allegedly shot at the vehicle hitting the back left side above the back quarter window. The bullet went through the headliner and then struck the front windshield," Moats said.
The suspect vehicle began to pursue the victim as he turned onto South 10th Street. During this time, the victim stated that he continued to hear gunshots being fired, according to the report.
That's when the armed victim reportedly reached for his personal handgun and began to return gunfire.
The suspect Buick proceeded to drive by the victim and turn east onto McCampbell Drive, at which time the victim began following the suspect vehicle, Moats noted.
"The victim stated he fired his weapon towards the suspects and thought he had flattened a tire due to seeing sparks begin to come from the wheel," Moats said.
The victim then followed the vehicle to South 25th Street and Wallace Avenue before turning around to return to his home.
Vigo County Sheriff's Department detectives joined the search for the suspects, picking up on the trail left at South 25th and Wallace Avenue --- following it to a residence at 2008 South 24th Street. They found the suspect vehicle at the residence.
"Detectives could not get anyone to answer the door so a perimeter was established and a search warrant was obtained. Two males were found in the residence and came out peacefully," Moats said.
This case remains under investigation by the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office and the Vigo County Prosecutor.
The Terre Haute Police Department and the Indiana State Police assisted with this case.
