Indiana Central News PUTNAMVILLE - Indiana State Police troopers from the Putnamville Post began utilizing aircraft to detect speeding vehicles locally this morning. The initial flight took place above SR 63 in northern Vermillion County ISP Sgt. Joe Watts said the use of aircraft is beneficial to roadway safety, explaining that patrolling above state highways and interstate systems throughout Indiana will become more commonplace in efforts to enforce speed limits and reduce reckless driving. “The Indiana State Police will continue to use every tool available to decrease dangerous and aggressive driving and to ensure public safety on our highways,” Watts said. With the help of the Cessna 172 Skyhawk, piloted by Sgt. Lee Wright, Putnamville District officers, Sgt. Jared Nicoson, Master Troopers Jason Owen and Gary Winters, and Senior Trooper Bill Bradbury issued 14 traffic citations --13 for speeding -- and 27 warnings between 9 a.m. and noon. Watts notes the highest speed of the morning was 90 mph in the 60 mph zone. “Sgt. Wright would detect speeding vehicles below, utilizing his Visual Average Speed Computer and Recorder and a set of pre-determined painted lines on the roadways edge. Sgt. Wright would then radio the units below and guide them to the target vehicle to ensure the correct vehicle was stopped for enforcement action,” Watts said. Comments are closed.
