Indiana Central News CLAY COUNTY— A Brazil man was arrested early yesterday morning following investigation into reports of theft in recent weeks around the 7600 block of CR 200 W and Summit Lawn Cemetery area in Clay County. Drew M. Atkinson, 23, was booked into the Clay County Jail Sunday. He is charged with attempted theft, escape and criminal trespass. Indiana State Police Sgt. Joe Watts said Atkinson and two other suspects had attempted to take a 5-feet x 9-feet single axle trailer owned by the caretaker of the cemetery that was parked at the rear of a wooded in area in the cemetery. Master Trooper Todd Brown was parked in the area at 2:30 a.m.,when he noticed the gray 2002 Jeep at the west side of the cemetery. Trooper Brown stopped the vehicle -- which had allegedly disregarded several posted no trespassing signs on the property. Further investigation revealed Atkinson allegedly solicited the help of the other two occupants with false information and they were not charged, Watts noted, adding that Atkinson also allegedly attempted to flee law enforcement. "While deputies were escorting him to the book-in process, Atkinson briefly escaped custody, but was quickly apprehended and returned to the Clay County Justice Center without incident," Watts said.
