UPDATE: The suspect in the officer-involved shooting June 17 was released from the Terre Haute hospital early Wednesday afternoon and transported to the Clay County Jail. He is charged with:
----- By Lucy Perry Indiana Central News CLAY COUNTY - Marion Haywood, 23, of Owensburg, Indiana, is facing multiple charges after police say he led them them on a dangerous pursuit in Clay County early this morning. According to Sgt. Matt Ames, of the Indiana State Police, Haywood had allegedly attempted to drive directly towards a deputy at one point in the pursuit. The officer responded in self-defense by shooting his duty weapon at the suspect. Haywood suffered non-life threatening injuries in the incident and was transported to a Terre Haute hospital for treatment. ![]() Clay County Sheriff Paul Harden requested the Indiana State Police to investigate the officer-involved shooting, in accordance with department policy. Deputy Hunter Gambil , with one -and -half years of service to the department, has since been placed on administrative leave, as the investigation continues. While fleeing police earlier in the the pursuit, Haywood allegedly discarded several items from the moving vehicle along SR 59, Ames said -- explaining further investigation revealed the items were were improvised explosive devices. The ISP bomb squad assisted in the investigation. "Upon reviewing all the information, the EOD team found the discarded items to be active explosives. The EOD team used a device to neutralize the discarded items, deeming the scene safe," Ames said. The initial investigation began Just before 2:30 a.m., when deputies responded to a residence on a report of a suspicious person banging on the door, outside of Centerpoint --near the Clay/ Vigo County line --- off SR 46. The suspect had left the residence prior to officers' arrival. A short time later, a deputy observed the possible suspect vehicle, traveling at a high rate of speed, eastbound on SR 46 near CR 150 W. He attempted a traffic stop. The suspect reportedly disregarded the deputy, continuing northbound on to SR 59. The pursuit continued onto CR 100 E. and CR 300 N., where Haywood ultimately lost control of the vehicle -- leaving the roadway. The deputy was able to catch up Haywood at that time. However, the subject had managed to get the vehicle back onto the road and was allegedly driving directly at the deputy. The deputy fired his gun. The suspect sped off and quickly exited the vehicle. He attempted to flee on foot and was apprehended a short time later -- with the assistance of a K-9, according to the report. Meanwhile, Haywood will be placed into Clay County Jail custody once he is released from the hospital. In addition to local charges, Haywood was also wanted on an active warrant out of Monroe County for domestic battery with a deadly weapon. Comments are closed.
