Indiana Central News SULLIVAN COUNTY- A Shelburn man was arrested yesterday for allegedly robbing the store where he works just the night before. Dustin J. Cottrell, 28, was transported to the Sullivan County Jail around 2 p.m., where he is charged with burglary, a level 5 felony and theft, a level 6 felony. According to Sullivan County Sheriff Clark Cottom, the department was notified of the overnight break-in at the Dollar General store in Shelburn -- in which the manager reported several thousands of dollars in cash was missing from a safe. All signs quickly led investigators to believe someone familiar with the store was likely to be the suspect. "A store employee described arriving for work in the early morning hours, to find the front door unlocked. The employee said the burglar alarm had also been deactivated," Cottom said, noting that no signs of forced entry was found. During Lt. William Snead's investigation of the scene, he could see that the safe in the office had been opened, also with no signs of force entry. Further investigation revealed the suspect had removed the hard drive from the video surveillance system. Cottom explained that Lt. Snead obtained a list of employees who had keys to the building, knew the alarm code, and had the combination to the safe ---as evidence quickly connected the suspect with the internal crime. After questioning, the suspect reportedly confessed to the theft. "Cottrell first denied knowledge of the crime, but after some time admitted to the burglary," Cottom said , after police spoke with the suspect a short time later. Cottrell reportedly had in his possession a garbage bag, containing what appeared to be several thousand dollars in cash at the time of his arrest. Cottrell remains held in the jail on a $23,000. bond, with 10 percent allowed. Comments are closed.
