Indiana Central News PUTNAM COUNTY— A man appearing to have a seizure and choking on chewing tobacco passed out in his car before it sped off the roadway and into a yard and mailbox in Putnam County yesterday afternoon. Steven Hornback, 43, of Lafayette, was transported to Putnam County Hospital for treatment just after the responding trooper cleared the victim’s airway of a large amount of chewing tobacco, Sgt. Joe Watts said today. According to the report Indiana State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Trooper Yan Dravigne was flagged down by a passerby in the westbound lanes of US 40 near CR 300 E for the medical emergency just before 3 p.m. The driver reportedly appeared to be unresponsive in the stalled vehicle with all doors in the black 2002 Dodge pickup locked. As Trooper Dravigne approached the vehicle, the truck reportedly accelerated, driving off the north side of the roadway and into the residential yard and mailbox. Trooper Dravigne followed the vehicle on foot for the few feet, finding the driver remaining unresponsive where it crashed. Watts explained that Trooper Dravigne utilized his collapsible baton to break out the passenger side window of the truck to unlock the doors and then administer first aid. Cloverdale Fire/Rescue units and the passerby, Indiana Department of Corrections Supervisor Kevin Orme, assisted at the scene. Comments are closed.
