Indiana Central News A Terre Haute Police Department investigation has led to the arrest of five suspects on gang-related charges in connection to a shooting near a northside motorcycle clubhouse yesterday. . Assitstant Chief of Police Shawn Keen explained this morning that the following members and associates of the Diablos Motorcycle Club have been arrested:
The five were taken into custody and booked into the Vigo County Jail following witness statements, interviews and the recovery of physical evidence, including multiple firearms, Keen said. Detectives from the THPD and members of the special response team responded to the scene shortly after emergency crews were dispatched to a report of a man down at about 6 p.m. Keen said officers arrived to the scene and found the victim with an apparent gunshot wound to the neck, adding that the victim was transported to an out of area hospital for treatment of his injuries. Further investigation revealed that the man had been shot at while he sat in his vehicle outside the Diablos motorcycle clubhouse at N. 27th Street and Eighth Avenue. Police then secured the area around the clubhouse from N. 26th Street to N. 27th Street on Eighth Avenue. "Search warrants were executed at the Diablos clubhouse and a nearby residence. Twelve members of the Diablos Motorcycle Club were detained and transported to the Terre Haute Police Department," Keen said. --- By Lucy Perry Indiana Central News Many residents said they were surprised when they heard gunshots fired yesterday in their "quiet" northside neighborhood, near Sheridan Park. A man reportedly suffered from a gunshot wound near North 27th and Beech Streets at about 6 p.m. Terre Haute Police Department Special Response Team surrounded the Diablos Motorcycle gang clubhouse and blocked off the intersection -- just after emergency crews were dispatched to the area and transported the victim to a hospital. Information is limited at this time and a suspect has not been named.(UPDATE- victim confirmed as Kenneth Pitts, 53.) The Diablos Motorcycle Club -- where several members were detained at gunpoint a short time later to be questioned about the shooting --- has been part ot he neighborhood for "many decades," residents said. Many standing outside, watching police swarm the area, noted that the club members have always been respectful and haven't caused any problem that they know about.
One resident, Rick Orman, said he is friends with the club members --- and also knows the gunshot victim. He said the victim is about 50 -years- old and is believed to be in serious condtition.
Officials have not confirmed any information nor have they released a statement regarding the shooting at this time. Witnesses said at least a dozen men were taken into custody to be questioned in the shooitng incident, with the last person coming out with arms up around midnight.
