Indiana Central News Police spent about an hour trying unsuccessfully to apprehend a suspect following a police pursuit on Terre Haute's south side Saturday evening. Terre Haute Police officers attempted a traffic stop on the suspect in the area of S. 19th and Poplar Streets around 5 p.m. The suspect reportedly refused to stop and fled southbound on S. 19th, eventually striking a chain link fence on Margaret Drive near the overpass, according to scanner traffic. Another fence was reportedly "ripped down" during the pursuit at the former gas station located on Leeland Avenue. The suspect continued to evade police in the vehicle and then on foot. Ultimately, the suspect drove behind a concrete business located just to the east of Turner Coaches on Margaret Avenue. A handgun was later found inside the suspect vehicle during a subsequent search, according to scanner traffic. According to scanner traffic, the male, described as wearing a red and black hat and green sweats, got out of the car and ran from officers. A perimeter was set up around the businesses. A K9 from the Vigo County Sheriff's Office arrived to assist on scene. Ultimately, the search was called off and the suspect vehicle was towed from the scene. An arrest warrant for the suspect is pending. More information will be provided as it becomes available. |
