A large crowd came to show support for local law enforcement officers during a community Prayer Vigil this evening on the Vigo County Courthouse lawn.
Terre Haute Police Chief John Plasse said the community response to supporting the officers at the vigil was "heartwarming." "It's very troubling that officers are being killed just because of the uniform that we wear," he said, adding that the Terre Haute community is like a family to him. He asked the audience to participate in a moment of silence for the officers in the United States recently killed in the line of duty. Terre Haute Police, West Terre Haute Police, Indiana State University Police, Indiana State Police,Vigo County Sheriff’s Department and Indiana Department of National Resources Conservation Officers, along with family and friends, were invited to join officials as they prayed for officers and their families who have lost their lives and the protection of local officers who continue to serve our community. Terre Haute Mayor Duke Bennett remarked that it’s “story after story” we’re hearing about violence toward police officers. He added that community involvement is the solution to what seems like changing times from where law enforcement officers had more respect. “So many people are using violence to solve their problems, I guess,” Bennett said, in opening the ceremony. “We thank you as a community. That’s why we’ve gathered here today, not just to thank you publicly, but to pray for you.” Vigo County Prosecutor Terry Modesitt agrees and says officers don't get anywhere near the credit they deserve, as they protect and serve us. “What we’re hearing about across the country -- let’s face it -- there’s an evilness that we’re seeing out there. We need to turn to God once again, like it’s supposed to be: One nation under God,” Modesitt said. He noted that prayer does work. Indiana State Police Sgt. Joe Watts reflected on his 30 years as an officer. He delivered a moving speech about all his colleagues’ dedication to the public they serve. He said the support of the community is appreciated, as he reflected on two occasions in his career that two local officers were slain. Rev.Steve Wendler pointed out national statistics indicating that 150 officers will lose their lives each year, making the ultimate sacrifice. He reminded the audience about the real potential for harm officers face every day. “We know that they are truly placing themselves in harm’s way. They are standing against potential -- and very real danger-- in order to protect you and I,” he said, adding, “ They are ready to rush to our aid when a crime, an injury or an accident has happened; and they are also ready to step up into the place of a fallen defender. Vigo County Sheriff Greg Ewing recited famous radio broadcaster Paul Harvey’s popular narrative, “Policeman.” Speakers included Ewing, Plasse, Bennett; Modesitt; a representative from the office of Rep. Larry Bucshon, Joey Montgomery; Robin Heng of SPPRAK, Watts, Windler, and Rev. Billy Henry. Comments are closed.
