UPDATE: By Thursday evening, a severe travel advisory was in place for Vigo and surrounding counties. Residents are advised not to be on the road, unless it's an emergency.
-- By Lucy Perry Indiana Central News Winter weather continues to wreak havoc locally Thursday afternoon. The winter storm started Wednesday evening, on Groundhog's Day, bringing at least six -inches of snow around the Terre Haute area by the next afternoon. The heavy snow, with blustery wind, makes for difficult travel. The National Weather Service in Indianapolis reported winds at about 20 mph. Roads are covered in ice, as temperatures dipped to below freezing. Street department crews work to put salt and sand on roadways, while wind causes drifting snow to blow back onto the street, making travel treacherous and visibility low. The slick roads and drifting snow have resulted in multiple reports of slideoffs and crashes across the area. Meanwhile, officials urge residents to stay home, if possible. Sgt. Matt Ames, of the Indiana State Police, advises those who can't stay home during the storm, to please remember basic safety while out. 'Reduce speed, don't drive distracted, turn headlights on, and buckle up," he said. Many businesses and schools have closed in the area or reduced hours of operation, including the Vigo County School Corp. It is using e-Learning days for the remainder of the week.
