A routine traffic stop last night led to one man's arrest after a sharp K-9 alerted the trooper to heroine inside the car.
Charles J. Gabbard III, 31, of Terre Haute, is charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of paraphernalia and no valid driver’s license. Indiana State Police Trooper Ian Portteus and his K-9 “Czar” were patrolling Interstate 70 westbound near the 12 mile marker at about 8:20 p.m. Portteus reportedly noticed a red 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix speeding at more than 10 miles -per-hour above the speed limit. It was additionally noted that the vehicle had a defective headlight and license plate light.. “Trooper Portteus stopped the vehicle and during discussions with the driver and passenger, noticed possible indicators of criminal activity. K-9 Czar was deployed around the exterior of the vehicle and immediately indicated on the driver’s side of the Pontiac,” ISP Sgt. Joe Watts said. "An interior inspection of the vehicle yielded approximately one gram of suspected Heroin in the front driver’s side air vent.” The passenger of the vehicle was released and not charged in the incident..
