![]() By Lucy Perry Indiana Central News A driver and his passenger were taken into custody after leading police on a pursuit across Terre Haute, reaching speeds up to 70 mph following a late night attempted traffic stop. DeVonce O. Whitesides, 23, of Terre Haute, was booked into the Vigo County Jail around 2:30 a.m, He is charged with criminal recklessness, resisting law enforcement, reckless driving and operating a vehicle while intoxicated - endangering a person.The suspect had a passenger in the vehicle at the time of the pursuit, described as a black female. She apparently was released a short time after questioning. Public Information Officer Ryan Adamson, of the Terre Haute Police Department, explained that an officer attempted to stop the silver Toyota Corolla at 15th and Walnut for multiple traffic violations around 11:40 p.m The driver, described as a black male with dreadlocks, sped off . -- disregarding several stop signs along the way. Police ultimately were able to stop the suspect vehicle in the 1400 block of S. 9th Street, where Whitesides was apprehended. According to scanner traffic , he did not have a valid license. The nearly 45-minute chase spanned eastbound on Hulman Street, then south of Margaret Avenue,turning northbound on Fruitridge Avenue to Maple Avenue and then to Elm Street and then proceeding southbound toward Hulman Street. Multiple agencies joined in the chase, which continued along Wabash Avenue again. The suspect continued fleeing officers on Ohio, Walnut, Crawford, S. 15th, S. 17th, S.19th, Franklin,Streets and then the vacinity of Harrison and Washington Avenues --- before police were able to stop the suspect vehicle on S. 9th Street.
