Terre Haute man accused of shooting, killing his girlfriend

A Terre Haute man is is in jail after police say he shot and killed his his girlfriend Saturday afternoon.

The victim, Kristen Gregg, 27, also of Terre Haute, died at the hospital a short time later, after reportedly suffering a gunshot wound to the chest.

Steven W. Rickard, 33, of 1434 Grand Avenue , was booked into the Vigo County Jail around 10:45 p.m. He is charged with reckless homicide, serious violent felon in possession of a firearm and possession of methamphetamine.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the residence around 3 p.m. According to scanner traffic, the suspect reported he had accidentally shot the woman in the home while cleaning his handgun.

Terre Haute Police Department detectives responded to the scene and spoke with witnesses and processed the scene.

The investigation is ongoing.
