UPDATE 8-16-16--- Officials have ruled the cause of the fire as arson.
-- The Terre Haute fire Department is investigating a blaze at a popular discount store this evening at Kroger Plaza. The Dollar Tree, located at 25th Street and Wabash Avenue, is closed indefinitely after Battalion Chief John Long said the store and its contents are a total loss. No injuries were reported. However, Long noted that the high heat and humidity outside had many firefighters taking precautions not to suffer heat exhaustion. Crews arrived at the scene at about 7 p.m. Fire investigators spoke with two employees at the scene who said the fire started in the back of the store. Heavy smoke and water damage caused the next door stores to close as a result of the fire at Dollar Tree, including American Rental and First Wok, a Chinese food restaurant. Dollar Tree has two other locations in Terre Haute, including one on South Third Street and one on SR 46. According to the store website, the store stocks its shelves with items costing $1 or less, including: Cleaning supplies, health & beauty products, office supplies, school supplies, toys & crafts, teaching supplies, greeting cards, household supplies, home décor, floral supplies, and everything in between. The Terre Haute Police Department assisted at the scene and re-routed traffic from a section of 25th Street that was closed to traffic. This story will be updated as more information becomes available. -- See related story Comments are closed.
