A woman was injured after she allegedly walked into the path of a vehicle Saturday afternoon, as homecoming celebrations for Indiana State University were underway -- including the unofficial annual tradition of "The Walk."
Shakaiyra Reed, 25, of Indianapolis, was transported to an area hospital for treatment of injuries suffered at the intersection of Wabash and Barton Avenues. The driver of the vehicle, Cheryl Meares, 57, also of Indianapolis, was not injured. Terre Haute Police Department Chief Shawn Keen reports today that Reed is in stable condition, adding that alcohol does appear to be a factor for Reed in the accident. Chemical tests indicated that Meares was not under the influence at the time of the accident. THPD officers were sent to the intersection regarding the car versus pedestrian accident just before 2:40 p.m. "Upon arrival, officers discovered the female pedestrian in the roadway receiving treatment for her injuries from medics," Keen said.
Investigation revealed that Reed -- the first in a group of pedestrians -- attempted to walk northbound across Wabash Avenue near Barton Avenue. According to several witnesses, Reed was struck by the Silver Nissan Altima as it traveled eastbound.
Meares reportedly stated she was unable to stop in time when Reed walked into her path. Many students and alumni participate in "The Walk," stopping at several bars along the way to the stadium each year during ISU Homecoming. Comments are closed.
