A teen not seeing eye-to-eye with her parents is behind bars for allegedly setting her family residence on fire early this morning. The northside home is believed to be a total loss.
Carolyn Royer, 18 , was booked into the Vigo County Jail around 3 a.m. and is scheduled to appear in Division 1 Court today.
Just before being apprehended a short distance from the scene, Royer reportedly asked if the deputy was there because of the blaze. She then allegedly admitted to "starting the fire due to being upset with herself and her parents."
According to the report, Vigo County Sheriff's Deputies and the Otter Creek Fire Department were dispatched to 3901 E. Ladika Avenue in reference to the suspicious structure fire at about 2 a.m. after the suspect's father, John Royer, reportedly awoke to the smell of smoke in the residence.
He found a fire outside the bedroom door of his oldest daughter, Carolyn. He attempted to put the fire out himself, but was unsuccessful, according to the sheriff's department report. "Due to the smoke and flames he was unable to enter the bedroom and locate Carolyn. He then left to alert his wife and youngest daughter to evacuate the house," a VCSO press release states. Firefighters en route to the blaze noticed the suspect walking along Erickson Street and believed that she matched the description of the female. Deputies then found the suspect wearing pajamas and no shoes was found walking at the intersection of Erickson Street and White Avenue. Comments are closed.
