After 20 years at the helm of the Vigo County School Corp., Dr. Danny Tanoos announced his retirement as superintendent during the school board meeting held at the administration building on Wabash Avenue tonight.
His plans are to continue with the administration through Dec. 31, serving as superintendent until July 1. "The board just renewed my contract -- this has been my choice, my family's choice," Tanoos said, with much emotion projected in his voice. Tanoos had been serving as interim superintendent in 1999, when the school board gave him the appointment after he previously served in other capacities within the corporation since the late 1970s-- as a teacher and as principal. He is proud of the corporation's accomplishments during his tenure. "Our top priority and focus has been our students. We have been able to provide the best educational tools and programs necessary to equip our students to become productive citizens, and in turn produce a graduation rate of 89 percent," Tanoos boasted to the crowd just before his announcement, which was broadcast by various local news sources.
